For those who have children, selecting the best breed of kid friendly dogs is important. Sure dogs may be cute, friendly, and all but not all dogs are suitable for kids especially those who are three years old and below. Choosing dogs with the right temperament is vital if you want your kids to have a long lasting relationship with your dog.
When it comes to deciding which breed of kid friendly dogs to welcome into your home to become part of your family, you don't purely base your decision by just looking at a picture of a particular dog and tell yourself, "Hey, I bet little Nathan will like him!"
There are other important factors to consider to avoid making the wrong choice which may end with your dog accidentally hurting your kid/s. These factors are size, coat texture, coat length, activity level, and type of grooming.
Below is a list of kid friendly dogs that are commonly recommended by breeders, veterinarians, and dog trainers. Together with the factors mentioned above you can now make an informed decision.
1) Retrievers - They are "sporting dogs" and while Labrador retrievers weigh anywhere from 50-60 pounds, the Golden retrievers weigh anywhere from 60-80 pounds. They are good for kids because they are very gentle and tolerant towards playful poking done by kids.
Another good quality that retrievers have is that they will remain as playful as puppies all their lives. They are perfect for family outings at the beach because they are good swimmers.
Would-be owners however, should know that they shed quite a bit so it's best that they are brushed daily. Also they need to be regularly walked outdoors because they are active dogs.
2) American Staffordshire Terriers - These dogs are intelligent, outgoing, human-oriented, patient and protective of kids; they're very tolerant that when kids tease them they rarely respond. In fact, the dog could be injured without you knowing it.
AmStaffs are of medium height and prefer warmer climates also as they're active dogs, you should take them out for walks or jog with them regularly. They are easy to groom and are an average shedder due to their short-haired coat.
3) Beagles - They are well-muscled, have a mind of their own, and a well-developed sense of smell which they follow when they are distracted by the scent of animals that cross their path. They are perfect for the family because they are brave, sociable, intelligent, happy-go-lucky-dogs who love to wag their tails at everyone.
Beagles are kid friendly dogs because of their small to medium build plus they are gentle, playful, and even-tempered. Once they get used to their kid masters, they will adore them and become almost inseparable.
4) Pugs - They belong to the Toy Group and though these dogs have small frames they do have strong hard muscles. They also have a big round head that features large wrinkles, dark round eyes, small thin ears, a blunt square shaped muzzle, a curled tail, and a short coat that is soft, fine, and smooth.
Their playful, animated, loyal, affectionate, fun-loving, love to tease, anxious-to- please-their-masters temperament is perfect for families with kids or elderly around. They can be good watchdogs too and don't bark much which is why they are perfect for apartment or condo living.
5) Collies - This last in our list of kid friendly dogs became popular to families because of the popular TV show Lassie. They are sensitive, mild-mannered, easy to train, loyal, energetic, good-natured, plus they do well with other pets as well as other dogs.
They are good for families because of their high intelligence; they are not aggressive but even the well socialized ones become suspicious if they sense 'bad vibes' from strangers. As natural herders they are recommended for older kids as they have a tendency to herd kids or nip at running, screaming, playful toddlers.
